Beyonce Knowles is a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and movie actress. She was born on September 4, 1981, in Houston, Texas. Her mother, Tina Knowles, is a businesswoman and fashion designer. Her father, Mathew Knowles, is a talent manager and businessman. Her younger sister, Solange, is also a singer. Beyonce attended Parker Elementary School where she sang regularly in the schools’ choir. She later attended the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, followed by Alief Elsik High School.

The young Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, and three other girls formed the group, Girl’s Tyme. They competed unsuccessfully in the talent show, Star Search. Following a slow start, the girls landed a contract with Grass Roots Entertainment in 1995. A year later they were signed to Columbia Records and officially changed their name to Destiny’s Child. The group’s commercially successful second album, The Writing’s on the Wall, was released in 1999. The album peaked at #5 on the Billboard 200 and picked up six Grammy nominations.
